Social Walks

Join our relaxed group walks around mid-Cornwall.

Cornwall is a great place to own a dog, with many fabulous walks around various environments including beaches, woodland, dunes and rivers.

Each Thursday afternoon, past and present class members may join us to enjoy a social walk with their dogs. The walks provide an opportunity for some healthy exercise, dogs to run together, whilst their owners catch-up with each other. It’s also a chance for dogs to socialise with various breeds and to ask any dog-related advice from an experienced trainer.

Walk locations vary from week to week around mid-Cornwall. Below is a brief summary of our current walks, please zoom in on the map below for the exact meeting location of the walk.

Perran Dunes

Also known as Penhale or Perran Sands, this is a popular dog walk just north of Perranporth at Tolgate. The walk is about 1.5 hours across gently undulating dunes with just one small steep, sandy climb up St.Pirans monument at the half-way point. Mostly short dune grass, sandy areas and one or two patches of standing water in the wet seasons. Meet at the car park located about 100m on the right along the Haven Holiday Park road.

Ladock Woods

A woodland, owned and actively managed by the Duchy of Cornwall in the middle of the County, between Truro and Mitchell. This walk is about 1.5 hours. A few gentle hills and lots of flat track. Ladock woods are usually quite muddy outside of mid-summer so wellies or waterproof walking boots recommended. Meet at the main Ladock Woods car park off the country road between Ladock and Mitchell.

Pendower Beach

A wide and long beach on the south coast, just off the main road between Tregony and St. Mawes. With a wide tidal range, walks here are scheduled when a low spring tide occurs in the afternoon and do not take place in the summer due to seasonal dog restrictions. The walk is about 1 hour to the end of the beach and back with one hill between the car park and beach. Meet in the beach car park.

Actively managed and owned by The Woodland Trust, Kingswood is a very large wood, set on a steep hill in between St Austell and Mevagissey. Although lots of climbs, most are fairly steady, following purpose-built wide tracks and footpaths. Walk time is around 1.5 hours. Some muddy areas along the valley streams at the foot of Kingswood. Meet at the car park area accessed via the track from London Apprentice. Follow this track to the end – it’s not first car park you come across.

Josie Hawken

Puppy & Junior Foundation Course Trainer and Social Walk Host

Having been a firm dog lover all her life Josie came into formal dog training when faced with a particular cocker spaniel with attitude – what we like to call ‘a challenge’! Finding the whole question of canine behaviour and related training so fascinating, she embarked on the Intermediate and Advanced Think Dog training courses and was then accepted as a Member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. Josie owns a black Labrador and a long haired Corgi. Josie also offers one-to-one dog training by arrangement.
